Location: Derby
Salary: £60,000 – £70,000 + Company Car (Dependent on Experience)


Join a specialist engineering consultancy focused on the civil and structural design of electricity substation assets. From new builds to modifications and refurbishments, this company handles projects from initial concept through to completion.


They are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager with a strong background in civil engineering to lead their team of seven engineers. This is a key leadership role that combines technical expertise with team development and project delivery responsibilities.


About the Role:


As Engineering Manager, you will serve as the technical lead across a diverse range of substation projects. You’ll ensure delivery excellence, develop internal design standards, and support the growth and capability of your team.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead end-to-end project delivery, ensuring timelines and budgets are met.
  • Act as Independent Checker for design submissions.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to the engineering team.
  • Drive professional development and performance within the team.
  • Develop and implement robust design standards to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Support business development through client relationship management and opportunity identification.
  • Create and deliver a strategic departmental plan to advance both the engineering function and wider business objectives.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE) or perform CDAE role.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior design or engineering leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of civil/structural design principles and industry standards.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team development skills.
Desirable Experience:
  • Expertise in substation design.
  • Background in both civil and structural engineering.
  • Familiarity with National Grid technical standards and procedures.
