Job Description

Are you a graduate with a strong hockey background and the ambition to build a career in education, coaching or pastoral support? This Hockey Graduate Academic Coach role gives you the chance to develop your school-based experience in a prestigious boarding environment, combining hockey coaching with academic and wider boarding responsibilities.

*** Hockey Graduate Academic Coach
*** £18,000 annual salary plus accommodation
*** One Year Contract – September 2026 to July 2027
*** Superb boarding school based in Horsham
*** Provide academic, pastoral and boarding school support through hockey

This is a full academic year position in a leading boarding school setting in Horsham, where sport plays a major role in school life and staff are expected to contribute well beyond the classroom. Similar graduate sports assistant roles at the school have supported candidates into teacher training, further school roles and sports performance pathways. The wider sports provision includes hockey as one of the school’s main sports, alongside a broad physical activity programme and extensive facilities.

The Role
As a Hockey Graduate Academic Coach, you will support pupils both academically and pastorally while leading and assisting with hockey across the school. You will coach hockey as your main sport, support PE and wider physical activity sessions, help with fixtures and team management, and contribute to the organisation of a busy sports department. You may also support additional sporting activity where required as part of the wider programme. The role is varied and hands-on, with responsibilities that can include lesson support, supervision, match-day duties, administration and helping to maintain high standards of behaviour, punctuality and professionalism. The underlying school role this is based on combines sports delivery, practical support and involvement in the broader life of the school.

The Candidate
You will be a graduate with strong hockey knowledge, the confidence to coach and motivate young people, and the professionalism to work in a structured boarding school environment. You should be organised, reliable and able to build positive relationships with pupils and staff. This role would suit someone considering teacher training, school sport, pastoral work or a longer-term career in education.

You do not need to have your whole life mapped out in a leather notebook, but you do need energy, resilience and a willingness to get involved fully in school life.

The School
This is a highly regarded boarding school in Horsham with a strong reputation for academic achievement, co-curricular involvement and pastoral care. Sport is a central part of the student experience, and the school offers a large-scale programme supported by extensive facilities and a broad staff team. The school describes itself as a leading boarding school where academic excellence sits alongside opportunity, and its sports department supports a wide range of activities across the year.

Requirements
• A 2:2 degree or above
• Strong hockey coaching ability and a genuine interest in working with young people
• Clear communication skills and a professional, organised approach
• GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above
• Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
